SDRCrew's ADS-B: the air traffic above your home

✈️ The ADS-B tab decodes in real time the Mode S messages that every airliner transmits on 1090 MHz - position, altitude, speed, heading - and puts them on a map you follow live, with flight trails if you want to see them.

It does not stop at raw numbers: select an aircraft from the table or the map and SDRCrew goes online to find out who it really is - airline, model, registration, category, route, and even some photos of the specific aircraft, with direct links to airport-data.com, airliners.net, airframes.org and planespotters.net to learn more. From a 24-bit ICAO to "this is an A320 of [airline] that left from..." in one click.

At the top you always find the numbers that matter: how many aircraft tracked, how many with a known position, messages per second, maximum range reached - useful to understand whether the antenna is doing its job. And if you already have Virtual Radar Server or another mapping program, SDRCrew also exposes an SBS-1 feed so the data arrives there in parallel, without a second dongle.

SDRCrew stays free and open - if it is useful to you and you want to buy me a coffee, you will find the link here on Ko-fi. 73 de IU2PYG.

SDRCrew 1.0.3 — more solid FT2 decoding

An update on the app's "engine" side: two external decoders have been updated to the latest versions.

📡 Digital decoding (FT8/FT4/FT2)

Until now FT2 decoding relied on an internal trick (it reused the FT4 command with different timing). From this version the engine I use has changed: now FT2 has a dedicated, native command, which makes it more stable and reliable. FT8 and FT4 remain unchanged - I have already tested them live and they keep working as before.

📻 Digital voice (DMR/D-STAR/Fusion)

The digital voice decoder has been updated as well: native support for Airspy R2/Mini dongles, faster recovery of DMR control channels when the signal drops, and various refinements.

Update available through the app or on Codeberg.

📻 Voce digitale (DMR/D-STAR/Fusion)

Aggiornamento disponibile tramite l'app o su Codeberg.

SDRCrew 1.0.2 — a small fix

A quick maintenance release: v1.0.2 contains a single fix.

In the v1.0.1 article I had announced that the "Bandwidth" slider in the Spectrum tab now snaps to clean 50 Hz steps - but because of a publishing mistake that fix had not ended up in the downloadable package. With v1.0.2 it is now really included: the slider always stops on multiples of 50 Hz, no more odd values like "3,001 Hz".

Everything else (automatic DAB calibration, VU meter, signal quality bar) stays as described in the previous article. Update available through the app or on Codeberg.

SDRCrew 1.0.2 — piccola correzione

Aggiornamento disponibile tramite l'app o su Codeberg.

SDRCrew 1.0.1 — automatic DAB calibration

Version 1.0.1 of SDRCrew is out, with a feature I cared about a lot in the DAB tab.

📻 Automatic ppm calibration

Every RTL-SDR dongle has a small factory error on its crystal, different from dongle to dongle: without correcting it DAB simply does not lock. Until now you had to guess it by hand or go through a round of "typical" channels for your country.

Now you just press "Calibrate": the app scans all 38 Band III channels by itself, finds the strongest signal with a real decode (not just signal power, which can be misleading), and computes the dongle's real ppm on it. No country selection, no manual configuration - it works anywhere in the world there is a DAB+ transmitter within antenna range.

I tested it live on six different dongles, with very different crystal errors (from 17 to 77 ppm) - all calibrated correctly and automatically.

The DAB tab also has two more indicators: a VU meter for the audio volume and a signal quality bar based on correctly decoded data packets.

🎚️ More precise slider

A small refinement in the Spectrum tab: the bandwidth slider now always stops on clean multiples of 50 Hz instead of random numbers.

As always the app's automatic update will tell you by itself, or you can find it on Codeberg.

SDRCrew 1.0.1 — calibrazione DAB automatica
