RTL 433/868 Monitor: your control panel for the radio sensors at home

If you have an RTL-SDR dongle and an antenna, you probably already know how much stuff transmits on 433 and 868 MHz: weather stations, temperature and humidity sensors, door and window sensors, meters, car tyre pressure (TPMS), remote controls. Almost all of them transmit in the clear, and there is an excellent open-source decoder that reads them: rtl_433.

The problem is that rtl_433 is a command-line program. So I built RTL 433/868 Monitor: a free Windows app that uses it to show you everything in a readable way.

WHAT IT DOES

• List of the sensors it is receiving in real time, with the latest values and a 24-hour, 7-day and 30-day chart

• Recognises over 460 device models, with manufacturer, sensor type, modulation and transmitted data

• You can give each sensor a name and a location ("Cellar", "Balcony"): they stay saved between launches

• Export the data to CSV or JSON

• It flags the signals it cannot decode (remote controls with rolling code, for example) and can record them so you can study them with other tools

• Interface in Italian and English, it updates itself

NEW IN VERSION 1.1.0: LORA TAB (EXPERIMENTAL)

With the same dongle you can also listen to LoRa networks. There are presets for European LoRaWAN (868 MHz), Meshtastic and MeshCore (869 MHz) and LoRa-APRS (433.775 MHz), plus a custom mode. The app shows what travels in the clear: the LoRa-APRS text, the Meshtastic node addresses and the header of LoRaWAN packets (device, counter, port).

Two things to know:

• LoRaWAN sensor data is encrypted and cannot be read: only the metadata is visible.

• It is an experimental feature: the decoder has been verified on recordings, not yet on signals received live with the app. If you try it, your feedback is precious to me.

WHAT YOU NEED

Windows 10 or 11, an RTL-SDR dongle with the WinUSB driver (installed once with Zadig) and an antenna suited to the band you want to listen to. The installer downloads the required .NET runtime by itself. If Windows shows a warning because the installer is not signed, choose "More info" and then "Run anyway".

It is a hobby project, made in my spare time and distributed for free. The decoding work is done by the rtl_433 project, to which a huge thank you goes, together with those who develop the open-source LoRa decoders.

Ideas, reports and sensors that are not recognised are welcome. If it is useful to you and you would like to buy me a coffee, you will find it here on Ko-fi.
